Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa has claimed that it is wrong to doubt the professionalism of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been one of the best players in the world over the last five years.
Since the turn of 2015, Ronaldo has encountered a slump in form by his standards. After averaging more than a goal per game in the first half of the season, Ronaldo has been struggling for consistency. He did maintain his impressive record in the El Clasico by scoring against Barcelona recently, but it did not prevent Madrid from losing 2-1 against their arch rivals.
Ronaldo has certainly not helped himself with visible signs of unhappiness when his teammates take advantage of his misses to get a goal for themselves. However, Arbeloa has compared Ronaldo with Real Madrid legend Alfredo di Stefano as being the most important aspects in the club’s history. Speculation has been intense that Madrid may be willing to discuss offers for Ronaldo in the summer. The likes of Paris St Germain and Manchester City may be the only clubs that can afford the 30-year-old, but the possibility of him rejoining Manchester United has also been mentioned. Ronaldo has scored 40 goals and created 13 in 33 appearances this season.
“People have been unfair toward Cristiano Ronaldo. Nobody can doubt his professionalism. He has every right to feel that he was treated unfairly.Cristiano’s commitment cannot be matched. He is always the first on the training pitch and looks after himself at home.Real Madrid’s history is marked by Alfredo Di Stefano and by Cristiano Ronaldo. I do not know how long it will take before Madrid see another player like him,” said Arbeloa. Along with Ronaldo, Gareth Bale has also come under intense criticism and Arbeloa has also defended the form of the Welshman.
