Former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo says that he is confident that his former team can return to winning ways under Louis van Gaal, but they need to give the manager time. The Dutchman took charge of the club in the summer, but his first few months have been very poor indeed. United are facing the prospect of another season without Champions League football since they are struggling to assert their superiority in the top four race. Performances of late have certainly improved, but they are at least a season away from winning the title once again according to Ronaldo.

Ronaldo managed to win numerous Premier League titles with United before moving onto Real Madrid for a then world record transfer fee of £ 80 million. During the last 12 months, there have been several rumours that Ronaldo is keen on a return to Old Trafford where he is still adored by the fans. The 29-year-old has spoken with interest about playing in front of the United faithful once again. He is unlikely to come cheap since Madrid could command more than £ 60 million in transfer fees for the player. Ronaldo says that Chelsea, this season, are the team to beat and United will find it difficult to overcome Jose Mourinho’s men.

“Sometimes the coaches need time to change the team to what they want. In the Premier League all the teams are fighting a lot for points and even the clubs at the bottom of the table can beat those at the top. So it is tough. To get a good squad and a good team takes time so lets give Van Gaal the time he needs. He is a fantastic coach and very experienced and I am certain he will make United champions again, if not this year then very spoon after that,” said Ronaldo.
